GOMBE FARMERS’ HIPPO HORROR: CROPS RAZED, LIVES LOST IN YAMALTU-DEBA

Hippos gone rogue, over 40 of the beasts are trampling Gombe’s Hinna Community farmlands, wiping out 100+ hectares since Sept 2025 and costing N180m+ in ruined rice, maize, veggies like carrots, okra, watermelon.

Head farmer Zakari Ladan sounded the alarm Monday: “These monsters destroy 2 hectares a night, kill folks—three dead, three hospitalized in Gombe already.” Fishermen hit too; free-roaming herds threaten all.

Malam Haruna Hinna laments his N1.7m/ha carrot/okra plot trashed yearly, despite cries to state/fed govs, NGOs. “Exhausted, broke we need inputs to replant, fish farms for alternatives. Urgent help!”

Farmers beg: Secure our fields, livelihoods before hippos win.
