The Enugu State Police Command has recovered a cut-to-size single-barrelled gun abandoned by a fleeing male suspect during a public gathering at Jimoh Rauf Badamosi (JRB) Mini Stadium in Ibagwa-Aka, Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area.
Police spokesman SP Daniel Ndukwe disclosed in a statement that operatives from Igbo-Eze South Division, on routine surveillance Friday, observed the suspect carrying a black polythene bag suspiciously. Upon sighting the officers, the suspect abandoned the bag and escaped before apprehension.
A search of the recovered bag revealed the concealed firearm. “Efforts are being intensified to identify, arrest, and ascertain the criminal intentions of the fleeing suspect,” Ndukwe stated.
Commissioner of Police Mamman Giwa urged residents to remain law-abiding and security-conscious, calling for prompt reporting of suspicious individuals or activities to the nearest police station.
The recovery highlights ongoing police vigilance amid concerns over proliferation of small arms in the Southeast, often linked to cult activities, kidnappings, and communal clashes.
