UK-FUNDED SPRiNG & NJI SUPERCHARGE WOMEN, PEACE, SECURITY IN NIGERIA’S COURTS

Nigeria’s justice system just got a powerhouse boost! The UK-funded Strengthening Peace and Resilience in Nigeria (SPRiNG) programme teamed up with the National Judicial Institute (NJI) for a game-changing workshop in Abuja, embedding Women, Peace and Security (WPS) principles right into judicial training and processes nationwide.

SPRiNG Team Lead Dr. Ukoha Ukiwo hailed Nigeria’s fresh NAP III as the perfect launchpad to make WPS norms standard in courts – from curricula to policies – ensuring judges deliver gender-smart justice that protects women and girls from SGBV, conflict violence, and tech crimes. GEDSI Lead Amina Akano-Bello mapped out the judiciary’s starring role across NAP’s pillars: Boosting women’s leadership, slamming impunity, and fast-tracking victim protection in hotspots like Niger, Benue, Kaduna, Katsina, and Plateau.

CEDAW Vice Chair Esther Eghobamien fired up calls for bold reforms – criminalize ransoms and abductions, pioneer “speech trials” shielding whistleblowers, and tackle online scams hitting women hardest. NJI’s Adaeze Oby-Aziwe sealed it with an action plan promise: Practical steps ahead for WPS mainstreaming.
