Nigeria’s lawmakers aren’t messing around! The House of Representatives Ad hoc Committee on alleged discrepancies in the Tax Reform Acts just vowed a lightning-fast, no-stone-unturned investigation after spotting fishy differences between what the National Assembly passed and the official gazetted versions – a potential bombshell that could shake public trust in the entire lawmaking process.
Chairman Rep. Aliyu Betara (APC-Borno) laid it out post their inaugural Abuja meeting: Triggered by a colleague’s motion highlighting inconsistencies, the team is racing to reconcile every grey area, uphold legislative integrity, and restore confidence amid backlash over the four controversial Tax Reform Bills pushed by President Tinubu’s administration. These acts – Nigeria Tax Act, Nigeria Tax Administration Act, Nigeria Revenue Service Act, and Joint Revenue Board Act – aim to streamline over 60 overlapping taxes but exploded into controversy when gazetted versions allegedly deviated from approved texts, sparking cries of sabotage or error.
Betara promised full transparency and thoroughness, committing to deliver findings pronto for House action – ensuring constitutional compliance when trillions in revenue, business ease, and fiscal federalism hang in the balance. This probe could rewrite Nigeria’s tax future or expose deeper governance cracks!
