Ogun State’s Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development dropped a chilling stat during Tuesday’s 16 Days of Activism walk in Abeokuta: 502 Gender-Based Violence cases from January to November, signaling a crisis hitting women, girls, and vulnerable folks hard.
Commissioner Mrs. Adijat Adeleye called the numbers “deeply troubling,” with 120 at Sexual Assault Referral Centres and the rest via offices and partners—many more likely unreported due to fear and stigma. She spotlighted surging digital threats like cyberbullying, sextortion, and online grooming under this year’s theme “Unite to End Digital Violence against Women and Girls.”
The ministry’s pushing back with upgraded SARCs via UNFPA and state projects, community sensitization hitting rural and urban spots, and calls for legal overhauls like non-bailable rape and faster courts. Governor’s wife Bamidele Abiodun and Deputy Noimot Salako-Oyedele vowed stronger action to slash these numbers.
