West Africa’s top regional body is sounding the alarm, warning that democracy across the sub-region is facing a “critical threat” as coups, attempted coups and political unrest continue to spread.
At the 55th Session of its Mediation and Security Council in Abuja, ECOWAS Commission President Omar Touray said the situation has reached emergency levels, urging leaders to act fast to stop the region from sliding into deeper crisis. He stressed that member states must strengthen institutions, boost security and invest in early-warning systems to prevent further destabilisation.
Touray linked the emergency tone to ongoing tensions in the Sahel and the formal exit of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger from ECOWAS, a development that has further strained regional unity. He said the future of West Africa depends on leaders restoring confidence in governance and reassuring citizens that the region will not drift into avoidable chaos, adding that more concrete measures will be rolled out in the coming weeks after wider consultations.
