The African Union is sounding the alarm after Sunday’s botched military coup in Benin Republic, where soldiers calling themselves the “Military Committee for Refoundation” briefly seized the national TV station to oust President Patrice Talon—only for loyal forces to swiftly regain control.
AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Yousouf condemned the plot as a “grave violation” of key AU charters like the Constitutive Act and African Charter on Democracy, urging the plotters to return to barracks immediately and calling for unity to protect peace.
He highlighted the dangerous wave of coups across the continent, warning they undo democratic gains, shatter public trust, and threaten regional stability—especially amid West Africa’s recent power grabs.
The AU reaffirmed zero tolerance for unconstitutional changes, standing firm with Benin’s government.
