Dr. Olubunmi Aderibigbe of University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital is sounding the alarm on the growing threat of fires on roads and in homes, urging Kwara’s National Union of Road Transport Workers to take fire safety seriously before more lives and property are lost.
Recalling a recent burnt fuel tanker experience, Dr. Aderibigbe called out dangerous habits like carrying extra petrol in vehicles and storing fuel at home in jerrycans as major fire triggers. “If you’re alive, you can do business—so stop risking it with unsafe fuel handling,” she stressed.
She warned against rushing to scoop fuel from fallen tankers, highlighting that 441 Nigerians died in road fire incidents last year, mostly due to negligence and overspeeding. She broke down the science of fire, explaining how heat, oxygen, and fuel combine to cause disasters—and how keeping them apart saves lives.
Her key advice: make safety a personal priority, use fire extinguishers in vehicles, and never underestimate fire’s deadly potential.
