Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, Nigeria’s Defence Minister, has resigned his post effective immediately, citing health reasons in a letter addressed to President Bola Tinubu dated December 1. The president promptly accepted the resignation, thanking Abubakar for his valuable service to the nation.
Badaru’s departure comes at a critical time as the country measures the impact of the recently declared national security emergency. President Tinubu is expected to inform the Senate of Badaru’s successor later this week, underscoring the government’s commitment to maintaining leadership stability amid heightened security challenges.
Before his ministerial role, Badaru served as Jigawa State governor for two terms, from 2015 to 2023, before his appointment to the cabinet in August 2023. His tenure saw key initiatives in defence policies, aligned with the administration’s goal to strengthen national security infrastructure.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, confirmed the resignation in a statement and highlighted the ongoing efforts of the administration to protect Nigeria during this period of intense security reform.
This transition marks a significant moment for the ministry as Nigeria braces for more proactive measures against insurgency and crime under new leadership.
