Nigeria’s Senate just dropped a bombshell: Kidnapping is now officially terrorism, with a bill passing second reading Wednesday to slap death penalty on kidnappers, hostage-takers, and their networks – no fines, no mercy.
Sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and backed by 108 senators, the amendment to the Terrorism Act targets the “militarised” crime wave crippling communities, economies, schools, and lives nationwide. Bamidele called it a terrorist threat needing full security firepower, while Orji Uzor Kalu raged over raped girls and widowed moms, and Victor Umeh blasted banks aiding ransoms.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio fast-tracked it to committees on Judiciary, Security, and Interior for hearings in two weeks, vowing it’ll override states to shield Nigeria’s future amid the chaos.
