NIGERIA’S TOURISM CAN SOAR WITH TRADITIONAL TEXTILES

At a lively Lagos symposium, textile and fashion experts revealed a golden ticket for Nigeria’s tourism: embracing traditional fabrics, investing in local artisans, and boosting production. Hosted by Wear Nigeria, the event spotlighted how rich textile heritage like Aso-oke, Adire, and Ankara isn’t just fashion—it’s a cultural tourism magnet waiting to explode.

Prof. Pamela Cyril-Egware urged schools to teach textile crafts to save fading traditions and train fresh artisans, turning heritage into sustainable livelihoods. Mrs. Rebecca Obaitan from Ososo emphasized the untapped economic power of textile tourism, where storytelling around fabrics creates emotional connections that pull tourists in. It’s a grassroots game; communities spark progress, governments follow with support.

Wear Nigeria’s Austin Aimankhu pushed for tech upgrades, funding, and larger-scale production to meet growing global demand. The message is clear: these beautiful, authentic fabrics can put Nigeria on the tourism and fashion world map, creating jobs and preserving culture at once.
