A 37-year-old teacher, Mukaila Ismaila from Ayobo, Lagos, was arraigned Thursday at Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly luring a 16-year-old girl into an empty classroom at a tutorial center on November 6, forcing her to drink a noxious substance, then groping her body and private parts charges under Sections 246 and 263 of Lagos Criminal Law 2015, each carrying up to three years in jail.
Ismaila pleaded not guilty, securing N200,000 bail with two sureties; the case resumes December 18. This incident underscores Nigeria’s alarming school-related sexual violence crisis, where studies show up to 56% prevalence among secondary students, often by teachers, amid recent Senate passage of a 2025 bill imposing 5-14 year sentences on guilty educators without fines.
Such cases erode trust in education and demand swift justice to protect vulnerable students.
