GHANA FIRES BACK AT GUINEA-BISSAU’S 9TH COUP – BACKS ECOWAS DEMAND FOR DEMOCRACY NOW!

Ghana’s Foreign Ministry unleashed a fierce condemnation of Guinea-Bissau’s military coup on Nov 26—its ninth since 1974 independence—where Brig Gen Dinis Incanha’s forces arrested President Umaro Sissoco Embaló at the presidential palace amid gunfire at key sites, suspended elections held Nov 23, sealed borders, imposed curfew, and cut internet just before results were due. Labeling it a “brazen assault” on the peaceful polls where Embaló sought re-election amid rival claims, Ghana demands immediate constitutional restoration, legal grievance resolution, citizen/foreigner safety, and safe exit for ECOWAS observers—aligning with the bloc’s suspension of Bissau.

Embaló, detained then released via Senegal mediation, fled to Dakar; Gen Horta N’Tam now leads a one-year transition, claiming the coup foiled a politician-drug lord election-rigging plot—opposition leader Fernando Dias da Costa escaped arrest vowing resistance.

Accra urged calm to prevent escalation in the drug-trafficking hotspot (2.2M pop), echoing AU/ECOWAS protocols after prior failed plots against Embaló in 2022/2023.
