The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) is set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the South West Development Commission (SWDC) to reactivate old, unused railway routes in the South West geopolitical zone. NRC Managing Director Dr Kayode Opeifa said this partnership aims to boost regional connectivity and stimulate economic development.
Dr Opeifa welcomed SWDC’s entry into the rail sector, praising their continuation of the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission’s master plan for regional rail. The NRC is committed to collaborating with federal and sub-national agencies, supporting infrastructure projects to expand rail services nationwide.
SWDC Managing Director Charles Diji Akinola highlighted that the commission’s rail development strategy spans short, medium, and long-term plans. Key priorities include reactivating routes like Osogbo-Dagbolu-Erunmu, boosting movement of agricultural goods, and fostering public-private partnerships for rail infrastructure.
With full backing from all South West state governors, the initiative is poised to transform transport and economic activity across the region.
