WORLD BANK TO INVEST $500M IN GOMBE’S IRRIGATION PROJECT TO BOOST FOOD SECURITY AND CLIMATE RESILIENCE

The World Bank plans to invest in Gombe State’s irrigation system as part of the $500 million Sustainable Power and Irrigation for Nigeria (SPIN) project, aiming to strengthen food security, water management, and climate resilience. Chakib Jenane, the Bank’s Regional Director for Sustainable Development in Western and Central Africa, emphasized the commitment following a visit to Deputy Governor Manassah Jatau.

Jenane praised Gombe’s progress and outlined that the investment will expand irrigation infrastructure, directly supporting farmers and improving water usage. Discussions are ongoing for future programs focusing on agriculture and agribusiness to further the state’s development.

The SPIN project also includes multi-purpose infrastructure for irrigation and hydropower generation nationwide, enhancing livelihoods and bridging infrastructure gaps. Gombe State remains committed to collaborating with the World Bank to achieve significant results.
