WHO PRAISES NIGERIA’S RENEWED FOCUS ON UNIVERSAL HEALTH COVERAGE

The World Health Organization (WHO) has applauded Nigeria’s reinforced dedication to Universal Health Coverage (UHC), sustainable health financing, and workforce development as game-changers for strengthening the nation’s health system. Dr. Pavel Usu, WHO’s Representative in Nigeria, made the remarks during the 66th National Council on Health (NCH) opening in Calabar, highlighting the timely theme: “My Health, My Right: Accelerating Universal Health Coverage through Equity, Resilience and Innovation.”

Dr. Usu emphasized the importance of increasing the Basic Health Care Provision Fund to 2% of the Consolidated Revenue Fund and welcomed new policies on health workforce migration and training. However, he acknowledged challenges revealed by recent reviews that require solid implementation across all government levels. WHO pledges continued technical support and monitoring to ensure these reforms translate into tangible health outcomes.

UNFPA’s Dr. Lordfred Achu and civil society representatives also emphasized sustained efforts in reducing maternal mortality and broadening access to quality reproductive health, reinforcing a united front towards UHC for all Nigerians.

This council gathered top health officials, partners, and stakeholders to reaffirm commitment and align strategies for a healthier Nigeria.
