UNICEF REPORT REVEALS 20% OF WORLD’S CHILDREN LIVE IN EXTREME POVERTY, MOSTLY IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA AND SOUTH ASIA

A UNICEF report warns that nearly 20 percent of children worldwide survive on less than $3 a day, with almost 90 percent living in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Even in wealthy countries, 23 percent of children live with significantly less income than their peers.

UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell stressed that ending child poverty is possible if governments implement effective policies to unlock opportunities for children. The report analyzes data from over 130 countries, examining deprivation in education, health, nutrition, housing, sanitation, and water.

Child poverty severely undermines health, development, and learning, increasing risks of poor job prospects, shorter lifespans, and mental health challenges. Around 118 million children suffer deprivation in three or more critical areas. The report warns that cuts in foreign aid could leave an additional six million children out of school by next year, reversing progress made.
