In a major step towards reducing out-of-school children, UNICEF has helped integrate fewer than 112 Qur’anic (Tsangaya) schools into Katsina State’s formal education system. Rahama Farah, Chief of UNICEF’s Kano Field Office, revealed this during the 2025 World Children’s Day celebration in Kano.
This initiative has supported over 50,000 children, facilitating their transition from traditional Tsangaya schooling to public schools by registering children and their families into social registers for targeted support.
UNICEF also partners with Katsina on nutrition, birth registration, and combating Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV), with efforts resulting in significant government investments in nutritional programs and making Katsina the second state in Nigeria to achieve Open Defecation Free (ODF) status.
The collaboration aims to ensure children have legal identity and access to quality education while respecting the religious essence of Qur’anic schools.
