The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has inaugurated a 1.5-megawatt solar hybrid mini-grid at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Dala, Kano, enhancing reliable and affordable power for critical medical operations. This milestone also included the presentation of a 1.5 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine donated by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).
REA Managing Director Abba Abubakar-Aliyu framed the project as part of President Bola Tinubu’s drive to alleviate Nigeria’s power challenges, emphasizing solarisation across healthcare, education, agriculture, and security sectors. The solar grid will support the hospital’s growing energy needs and ensure uninterrupted operation of the MRI machine, reducing reliance on costly diesel generators.
Chief Medical Director Dr. Nurudeen Isa praised the intervention as timely and lifesaving, significantly cutting costs and making advanced healthcare services like MRI scans more affordable for patients. The project reflects a shared commitment to sustainable healthcare infrastructure, patient welfare, and environmental responsibility.
