FEDERAL HIGH COURT SENTENCES NNAMDI KANU TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT FOR TERRORISM

Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday sentenced Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to life imprisonment. This judgment comes four years after Kanu’s contentious arrest in Kenya and his return to Nigeria.

Kanu was convicted on all seven terrorism charges filed against him by the Federal Government. The court’s decision drew on prosecution evidence including video broadcasts where Kanu made violent threats against Nigeria and its citizens. He was found guilty of inciting violence and killings in pursuit of separatist goals for Biafra.

Despite the prosecution’s recommendation for the death penalty on several counts, the judge exercised mercy and gave life sentences for counts one, two, four, five, and six, while other counts were set to run concurrently. Kanu’s disruptive court behavior was noted throughout the trial.
