Dr. Zainab Mu’azu, a public health doctor at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi, is urging Nigerians especially those in the north to start taking early precautions for their skin as the harmattan season sets in. This dry, cold season can cause skin dryness, cracking, itching, and other dehydration issues if not properly managed.
Dr. Mu’azu advises regular use of moisturizers like shea butter, olive oil, or petroleum jelly, especially after bathing. She highlights drinking plenty of water to prevent dehydration and recommends avoiding harsh soaps and hot water that strip natural oils. Don’t forget to care for vulnerable areas like lips with frequent application of lip balm. Adding foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins A, C, and E such as fish, nuts, citrus fruits, and leafy greens can also help keep skin hydrated and healthy.
Simple, natural remedies and early care are the best way to keep your skin glowing and healthy through this harsh season.
