Road users and commercial drivers have called on the Federal Government to expedite the reconstruction of the Sokoto-Gusau-Funtua road project to ease heavy vehicular traffic expected at year-end. Despite the involvement of three different companies, residents lament the slow pace impacting travel times and safety.
Driver Malam Mu’assimu Auwal praised the project but noted that poor road conditions have doubled travel time from Sokoto to Gusau, increasing fuel consumption and vehicle maintenance costs. Fellow user Malam Yusha’u Adamu highlighted that the road’s deteriorated state has caused numerous accidents and provided cover for kidnappers.
Secretary of the Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers, Alhaji Muhammad Labaran, described the road as “horrible,” urging urgent government intervention to prevent further accidents and crime. Federal Controller of Works, Maigwandu Kassimu, defended progress, noting 13 kilometers have been completed with concrete pavements and promising work completion from Sokoto to Dange before Christmas.
FRSC Sector Commander Maikano Hassan emphasized road safety, launching a statewide campaign against reckless driving ahead of the festive season, urging compliance with traffic laws to ensure safer journeys.
