NOLLYWOOD: FROM VOLUME TO VALUE, TIME FOR QUALITY CONTENT

The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) is calling on Nollywood filmmakers to shift from producing lots of movies to focusing on higher-quality content that truly delivers value for audiences, investors, and the nation. Dr. Shaibu Husseni, NFVCB Chief Executive Director, made this appeal during the2025 Peace Anyiam-Osigwe Nigeria Digital Content Regulatory Conference in Lagos.

This year’s conference is themed “From Volume to Value: The Future of Nigeria’s Motion Picture Industry in the Digital Age.” Husseni stressed that the industry’s future depends on strong storytelling, cultural authenticity, and meeting global standards. He urged creators to see the digital age as a chance to elevate Nigeria’s creative output.

However, Husseni warned that the rise of online platforms has led to a growing disregard for regulatory requirements. Uploading films without classification or licensing from NFVCB is a clear violation of the law, and he cited relevant sections of the NFVCB Act to emphasize that this must stop.

To support creators and strengthen compliance, NFVCB has improved its processes—film classification now takes under24 hours, with some done in just five hours. Filmmakers can get certificates quickly and distribute their work without unnecessary delays. The board is also stepping up enforcement to protect young audiences from harmful or unclassified content and to keep Nigeria’s creative economy competitive.

Husseni emphasized that collaboration is key to progress and encouraged filmmakers to tell inspiring stories that carry Nigeria’s heritage and help raise the next generation to dream big. The board remains committed to preserving Nigeria’s cultural legacy.
