NMA SOUTH-WEST BACKS NARD DOCTORS ON STRIKE

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) South-West Caucus has thrown its weight behind the nationwide strike by the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), demanding better welfare and improved working conditions for doctors. In a joint statement signed by Dr. Adeniyi Fasanu and Dr. Akinluyi, the Chairman and Secretary of the Caucus, they expressed full support for NARD’s decision to strike.

The statement criticized the silence of the NMA National Officers Committee (NOC) on the progress of negotiations with the Federal Government and the Ministry of Health. It noted that talks have not met the expectations of doctors, with poor remuneration and deplorable working conditions still unresolved.

NMA South-West urged the Federal Government to show more commitment to fixing the health system and improving doctors’ pay. The Caucus also supported efforts by State Chairmen to collect signatures for an Emergency Draft Memorandum (EDM) to escalate the issue.

Special appreciation was given to Gov. Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti for making state doctors the highest paid in the South-West, and to Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo for addressing members’ demands and ensuring industrial peace at Ladoke Akintola University Teaching Hospital.
