FIRST LADY OLUREMI TINUBU NAMED GRAND MATRON OF ROAD SAFETY SPECIAL MARSHALS

First Lady Sen. Oluremi Tinubu was honored on Tuesday as the Grand Matron of the Road Safety Special Marshals, an honorary title given to influential women who excel in road safety advocacy. The ceremony took place in Abuja, with FRSC management led by Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed in attendance.

Grateful for the recognition, the First Lady urged stronger use of technology and better cooperation among agencies to cut down road crashes across Nigeria. She called for stricter enforcement of speed limits and more FRSC personnel on the roads, especially during festive seasons, to ensure safer travel.

She acknowledged ongoing road rehabilitation efforts but stressed the continued need for improvement. She encouraged expanding public awareness campaigns and boosting enforcement of speed regulations. Importantly, she highlighted the need for comprehensive care for road crash victims and their families through collaboration between FRSC and relevant government bodies.

“I believe we should do more with speed limits. People must comply to avoid accidents. In developed countries, speed limits are strictly followed,” she said. “We need more officers on the roads during critical periods like Yuletide to protect lives.”

Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed praised the First Lady’s dedication to Nigerians’ welfare and road safety. He described her role as the “mother of the nation” and emphasized her position as the campaign’s champion to drastically reduce accidents.

Mohammed also revealed alarming statistics, with Nigeria losing over 6,000 lives annually to road crashes, impacting families, students, and women deeply. He called for greater partnerships and national support to meet the FRSC’s goal of cutting road accidents by 50% by 2030.

The FRSC recently launched Road Traffic Crash Victims Day, gathering experts and scholars worldwide to reinforce advocacy efforts. The Corps Marshal expressed confidence that First Lady Tinubu’s involvement would boost public awareness and save lives on Nigerian roads.
