President Bola Tinubu has applauded the Super Eagles for their valiant effort in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoffs, despite Sunday’s heartbreaking loss to the Democratic Republic of Congo in Morocco. The President’s message, shared by his spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, encourages the team to move past the defeat and gear up for the upcoming 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The Eagles narrowly exited the World Cup race after a 1-1 draw in extra time and a 4-3 penalty shootout loss to DR Congo, marking the second consecutive time Nigeria has missed out on the tournament. Tinubu recognized the team’s determination, especially their first-leg playoff win over Gabon, and called for renewed focus on the AFCON.
“Though the defeat stings, we must applaud our players’ efforts and keep supporting them,” said Tinubu. “It’s time for football officials, players, and all stakeholders to re-evaluate and commit fully to reclaiming our football glory at the Cup of Nations.”
The Super Eagles came close in the last AFCON final, losing a tight 2-1 match to hosts Côte d’Ivoire, leaving Nigeria with a hard-earned silver medal.
