SOUTH AFRICA’S CITRUS EXPORTS SOAR TO RECORD 203.4 MILLION CARTONS IN 2025

South Africa’s citrus exports skyrocketed by 22% in 2025, hitting a historic high of 203.4 million cartons (each 15 kg) and surpassing the 3 million-ton milestone for the first time. This record growth is credited to favourable weather, the maturation of new orchards, and enhanced farming efficiency in water management and pest control.

Global demand, especially for oranges and lemons used in juice production, soared, with key markets including the Middle East (19%), Asia (15%), and Russia (9%). Improvements in logistics and port operations also boosted export capacity.

The Citrus Growers’ Association (CGA) is rolling out its Vision 260 strategy, targeting 260 million cartons annually by 2032, which could create 100,000 new jobs and significantly boost foreign exchange inflows.

Among citrus varieties, Valencia oranges saw a 26% increase to 61.8 million cartons, mandarins rose 28% to 53.5 million cartons, and lemons climbed 19% to 41.3 million cartons compared to 2024.
