SHEIKH HASINA SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR 2024 UPRISING CRIMES

Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was sentenced to death on Monday by the International Crimes Tribunal in Dhaka for crimes against humanity during the violent suppression of the 2024 mass uprising that ended her 15-year rule. The court found her responsible for ordering troops to shoot protesters, resulting in multiple deaths.

The tribunal also sentenced former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan to death and gave former police chief Abdullah Al Mamun a five-year prison term. Hasina, currently living in exile in India, was convicted alongside her aides in a crowded, tightly secured courtroom.

In reaction, Bangladesh saw widespread unrest: bomb blasts, arson attacks, and torch-lit protests erupted across the country, including the capital. The banned Awami League party called for a two-day nationwide lockdown and denounced the trial as politically motivated.

The government responded with heavy security deployment, including paramilitary Border Guards, to keep order. Police in Dhaka were ordered to shoot anyone involved in violence, aiming to restore calm as traffic remained unusually light on Monday morning.
