A Munich court has ruled that German prisons are not legally required to serve vegan meals to inmates. This decision came after a prisoner claimed his basic human rights were violated because he was offered only vegetarian and lactose-free meals, with the option to buy his own vegan food.
The court explained that catering to every individual belief or diet in prisons is complicated due to the diverse range of faiths and ideologies across Germany. Still, it emphasized that prisoners should have the chance to eat according to their personal worldviews whenever possible.
In this case, the court found no medical or religious reasons to reject the vegetarian and lactose-free options provided, making the prison’s meal offerings lawful. The inmate had challenged the policy based on ethical concerns about animal welfare and sustainability, arguing it infringed on his rights.
