AI WON’T REPLACE PRIESTS, SAYS ICT EXPERT AT ENUGU CATHOLIC SYNOD

At the 4th Enugu Catholic Diocesan Synod, ICT expert Mr. Chinedu Chibuzor reassured everyone that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is not here to replace Catholic priests in their pastoral duties. Speaking during the event themed “Faith and Practice in Enugu Diocese: Opportunities and Challenges,” Chibuzor highlighted how AI can actually help priests by speeding up research and enabling youth training online.

He emphasized that AI should be embraced as a tool that supports evangelism and faith growth—not as a threat. The Auxiliary Bishop of Enugu, Most Rev. Ernest Obodo, echoed this view, explaining that priests’ role in Sacraments and spiritual presence cannot be substituted by technology, except for pandemic-related exceptions.

Bishop Callistus Onaga, who opened the synod, pointed out that alongside AI, discussions will cover social media challenges, neo-paganism, youth empowerment, and catechesis. He acknowledged that modern technology poses complex challenges but also offers opportunities for the church to evolve.

The synod brings together church leaders and faithful to tackle issues facing the diocese head-on. Among these is restoring trust shaken by prosperity preaching scams, emphasized by Bishop Peter Cardinal Okparaeke of Ekwulobia Diocese. He urged priests to craft homilies that resonate deeply and grow faith authentically.

Rev. Fr. Christian Anieke, Synod Planning Committee Chair, called for unity in the church’s renewal journey, hoping the discussions will yield strong, practical solutions for today’s faith challenges.
