NIGERIA URGED TO BOOST POLICE COLLABORATION TO FIGHT ILLEGAL ARMS

The National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW), through its South-West Zonal Director, retired Commissioner Abiodun Alamutu, is calling for stronger teamwork with the Nigeria Police and other security agencies to tackle the spread of illicit weapons.

During a visit to Lagos State Police Commissioner Mr. Olohundare Jimoh, Alamutu highlighted that while the Centre enjoys good relations with the military and Customs, collaboration with the police at the zonal level needs improvement. Lagos, as Nigeria’s security and economic hub, is expected to lead this effort.

NCCSALW, established in 2021 and formalized by law in 2024, is tasked with retrieving, storing, and destroying all illegal arms intercepted nationwide. The Centre maintains a national database, coordinates with international bodies like the UN and ECOWAS, and monitors policy compliance.

Alamutu stressed that this partnership is vital for curbing the flow of small arms, which pose serious security threats exacerbated by Nigeria’s porous borders with conflict-prone neighbors.

Commissioner Jimoh assured full police cooperation, underscoring the importance of joint intelligence sharing and frequent recovery of both locally made and foreign weapons to secure the nation.
