The Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday overruled the no-case submission made by former Acting Accountant-General of the Federation (AGoF), Chukwunyere Anamekwe Nwabuoku, in his ongoing money laundering trial involving N868 million.
Justice James Omotosho ruled that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had presented a prima facie case that requires Nwabuoku to open his defence. The judge clarified this does not imply guilt but ensures the defendant’s right to a fair hearing.
Nwabuoku faces nine counts, accused of conspiring with several companies to launder proceeds of unlawful activities during his tenure as Director of Finance and Accounts at the Ministry of Defence between 2019 and 2021. The charges are under the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 (amended).
The court adjourned the case to November 24, 25, and December 9 for the former AGoF to present his defence.
