Veteran broadcaster and former NTA Director-General, Prof. Tonnie Iredia, has announced a revolutionary shift in Nigerian media education through the establishment of Tonnie Iredia University of Communication in Benin City. He emphasized the need to replace generalist mass communication degrees with specialised programmes producing industry-ready experts in fields like Public Relations, Broadcasting, Journalism, and Advertising.
Prof. Iredia highlighted that the university’s curriculum, approved by the National Universities Commission, focuses on a 40% theory and 60% practical training model. This approach ensures students graduate with deep expertise and hands-on skills, matching real-world demands. He stressed the necessity for media professionals to possess confidence, competence, and courage to uphold journalistic integrity and hold power accountable.
The university requires standard admission criteria and aims to transform Nigeria’s media landscape by fostering excellence and professionalism, a vision praised by education authorities and stakeholders.
