SUDAN’S EL FASHER TAKEN OVER BY RAPID SUPPORT FORCES, LEAVING CIVILIANS IN CRISIS

The situation in Sudan’s North Darfur remains deeply unstable after the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) captured El Fasher on October 26 following an 18-month siege. Although major clashes have lessened, ongoing sporadic fighting and drone strikes continue to threaten civilians with looting, forced recruitment, and gender-based violence.

Nearly 89,000 people have fled El Fasher and nearby areas, many arriving exhausted in Tawila after days on foot escaping violence. The UN and partners are providing emergency food, water, sanitation, health care, and psychosocial support, though resources fall short of growing needs.

UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Tom Fletcher, arriving in Port Sudan, is pushing for an end to atrocities in Kordofan and Darfur, advocating for humanitarian access and funding to save lives across conflict lines.

Displaced families face dire shortages of shelter and essentials, while overwhelmed host communities struggle to cope. The UN emphasizes the urgent need to protect civilians and ensure safe, sustained aid delivery amid this escalating humanitarian crisis.
