SOUTH EAST TAEKWONDO CHAMPIONSHIPS: IMO AND ABIA TOP MEDAL TABLES WITH YOUNG TALENT SHINING

The 2025 South East Taekwondo Championships held at Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, showcased outstanding performances with Imo State leading the medal standings, followed by Abia. Coordinated by Olympic medalist Chika Chukwumerije, the event featured 74 athletes from Imo, Abia, Enugu, and Ebonyi states battling for top honors.

Imo dominated with 41 medals—13 gold, 15 silver, and 13 bronze—securing the championship, while Abia claimed 28 medals including 12 gold. Ebonyi and Enugu rounded out the table with eight and four medals respectively. Chukwumerije highlighted the championships’ role in grassroots development and champion-building.

Imo’s Sports Commissioner, Obinna Onyeocha, praised the event as a platform nurturing future champions and pledged continued support for martial arts growth in the region. The regional tour continues with the next championship scheduled for February 20-21, 2026 in Umuahia, Abia.
