The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed its intent to arrest political activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, citing allegations of plans to incite violent protests in Lagos. Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh stated at a security meeting that despite multiple invitations, Sowore has not appeared at the command headquarters.
Acting under Section 215 of the Nigerian Constitution to maintain law and order, the police declared Sowore wanted, ordering any officer to arrest him upon sighting him anywhere except a courtroom. Jimoh highlighted recent interception of 300 persons mobilizing a disruptive protest on the Third Mainland Bridge, where 13 suspects and protest equipment were seized.
Jimoh dismissed pushback on social media, emphasizing that his actions are lawful and intended to protect Lagosians and the state’s economy. He assured readiness to comply immediately with any court orders but noted none has been served yet. Human rights activist Segun Awosanya (Segalink) supported the police, praising Jimoh’s professional leadership and urging dialogue over street protests for reform while warning against lawlessness regardless of status.
