FIDA URGES UNIFIED ACTION AGAINST EARLY MARRIAGE AND GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE IN NIGERIA

Mrs. Nnenna Eze, Chairperson of FIDA Ikeja branch, has called on governments, families, and religious institutions to unite in combating early marriage, a major driver of gender-based violence (GBV). Speaking during FIDA’s 2025 Annual Dialogue with religious leaders, themed “Strengthening Religious Institutions in Preventing GBV,” she stressed that early marriage steals girls’ freedom, education, and happiness.

Using Nollywood actress Regina Daniels’ case, Mrs. Eze highlighted the emotional trauma and societal damage caused by forced early marriages. She shared her personal near-experience with child marriage to emphasize her passion for the cause. FIDA advocates for community and religious leaders to spread awareness to reduce GBV and protect girls.

Country Vice President Mrs. Eliana Martins reiterated opposition to underage marriage, encouraging government and communities to enforce laws protecting children’s rights and ensure girls remain in school.

Recent reports show Nigeria’s child marriage rate has dropped from 44% to 28.6%, thanks to interventions by NGOs, UN agencies, and local governments, yet challenges remain linked to poverty, tradition, and inequality.
