Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, has assured that the government and military high command will fully protect soldiers who are performing lawful duties. He made this clear during a ministerial press briefing in Abuja ahead of the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.
Badaru’s remarks come after a heated altercation on Tuesday between the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, and a Navy Lieutenant involving a disputed land allegedly linked to former Chief of Naval Staff Vice Adm. Awwal Gambo. The Defence Minister emphasized the military’s commitment to safeguarding its officers, stating, “We will not allow anything to happen to him as long as he is doing his job diligently.”
The 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, themed “Valour, Sacrifice and Unity: Honouring Our Heroes,” will feature various events including the National Emblem Appeal Launch by President Bola Tinubu and aims to strengthen the bond between the military and civilians.
