VICE PRESIDENT KASHIM SHETTIMA URGES GLOBAL LEADERS TO MOVE FROM PLEDGES TO ACTION AT COP30

Vice-President Kashim Shettima called on world leaders at the 30th UN Climate Change Conference in Belém, Brazil, to take “reasonable action” and shift from promises to real performance in tackling climate change and its devastating effects. Representing President Bola Tinubu, Shettima reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to reduce emissions by 32% by 2035, unveiling Nigeria’s climate finance framework to attract billions in clean energy investments.

Shettima stressed climate ambition requires more than goodwill; it needs a fair system recognizing developing nations’ challenges. He highlighted Africa’s leadership potential in carbon capture, renewable energy, and emissions monitoring, emphasizing cooperation to turn ambition into prosperity.

Echoing this urgency, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres warned that the world has failed to keep warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius and called for a paradigm shift to reduce climate risks swiftly. Brazil’s President Lula da Silva stressed collective effort and listening to indigenous communities, while the Prince of Wales urged decisive commitment to safeguard nature for future generations.
