Islamic clerics from the League of Imams and Alfas in Yorubaland have strongly dismissed allegations of genocide against Christians in Nigeria, urging the United States and global leaders to avoid premature judgments that could tarnish Nigeria’s image. The League’s stance was shared at an emergency meeting in Ibadan, led by Sheikh AbdulRasaq AbdulAzeez, Grand Mufti of Yorubaland.
The clerics emphasized Nigeria’s diverse, multi-religious society built on a foundation of peaceful coexistence and tolerance, cautioning that while security challenges exist, they do not constitute targeted persecution. They noted the danger of misleading narratives that threaten national unity.
They highlighted the centuries-old harmony among Yoruba Muslims, Christians, and other faiths, fundamentally rooted in peaceful and just teachings. The League called for responsible international reporting and encouraged homegrown dialogue to address internal issues.
The communiqué stressed the value of Nigeria’s unity and called upon all Nigerians to view diversity as a source of strength, not division, reaffirming that no genocide is occurring and urging cooperation based on truth and respect, not political bias.
