Lamu Audu, Managing Director of Mainstream Energy Solutions and Board Member of Nigeria Independent System Operator, urged adoption of targeted electricity subsidies at the 5th Annual Power Correspondents Association conference in Abuja. He stressed that targeted subsidies protect vulnerable Nigerians while reducing harmful market distortions compared to blanket subsidies.
Audu emphasized that balancing cost-reflective tariffs with energy affordability is key to Nigeria’s electricity reform. Carefully designed lifeline tariffs and welfare-linked rebates can protect low-income households and maintain efficient market functioning.
He called for gradual, transparent tariff reforms tied to improved service reliability to build consumer trust. Reducing losses in the power value chain and aligning tariff reforms with gas pricing and energy efficiency were also highlighted as essential steps.
PCAN Chairman Obas Esiedesa echoed the need for fair, socially responsible pricing that balances economic sustainability with welfare as millions still live in darkness or face high costs and poor service.
