KADUNA LAWMAKERS BECOME SGBV AMBASSADORS, VOW TO FIGHT ABUSE AND DEFEND HUMAN RIGHTS

Members of the Kaduna State House of Assembly have been honored as Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) ambassadors during a key parliamentary engagement focused on human rights and civic freedoms. The event, themed “Addressing Declining Civic Space and Restrictive Laws,” aimed to strengthen lawmakers’ commitment to enhancing laws and justice for abuse survivors.

Organized by community empowerment and domestic violence groups with support from international partners, speakers emphasized the urgent need for a vibrant parliament and institutional mechanisms to increase oversight, public trust, and accountability on human rights issues.

Kaduna’s National Museum Curator, civil society leaders, and legal experts stressed reclaiming positive narratives about Kaduna, promoting cultural pride, and demanding full enforcement of existing SGBV laws. Lawmakers pledged support for agencies tackling abuse, pledging public engagement and stronger oversight.

The engagement highlighted the essential role of media, civil society, and young voices in defending civic space and reshaping public perceptions for a peaceful, inclusive Kaduna State.
