The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Ondo State Sector Commander, Dr. Samuel Ibitoye, has urged drivers, passengers, and pedestrians to take full responsibility for their safety to curb the rise in Road Traffic Crashes (RTCs). Speaking at a 2025 Ember Months town hall meeting at Achievers University, Owo, he highlighted that thousands of RTCs in 2024 led to unacceptable deaths and injuries nationwide.
Ibitoye warned against distractions for drivers and encouraged passengers to engage responsibly, emphasizing collective efforts with stakeholders for safer roads. Prof. Irinoye Omolola of Achievers University and Mr. Wale Babalola of the National Union of Road Transport Workers praised FRSC’s professionalism and pledged cooperation to promote road safety during the yuletide season.
National data reveals that between January and September 2025, Nigeria recorded 7,715 road crashes, causing 3,915 deaths and injuring 24,674 people — a rise compared to 2024. The FRSC attributes the increase primarily to human factors like distracted driving, speeding, and fatigue, reinforcing the need for vigilance and discipline on the roads.
