Professor Yetunde Olumide, the first female Emeritus Professor of Medicine at University of Lagos (UNILAG), inaugurated the new dermatology centre at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) in Lagos. The centre, described by Olumide as a “centre of excellence for dermatology care,” aims to improve skincare outcomes in Nigeria and serve as a global hub for dermatology research, teaching, and training.
Fully equipped with modern facilities, the centre is expected to enhance patient care and encourage healthcare workers to practice in Nigeria, helping to reverse brain drain. Olumide, 83, expressed joy witnessing this landmark achievement, recalling the previous dilapidated facility where she worked decades ago.
LUTH’s Chief Medical Director, Dr. Wasiu Adeyemo, highlighted that the solar-powered, three-floor building offers comprehensive dermatology and rheumatology services, supported by the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda for healthcare funding.
At the event, Prof. Adegbola Ogunbiyi from University of Ibadan urged the government to prioritise dermatology care, stressing that skin diseases impact individuals’ quality of life and can be stigmatizing yet treatable if proper care is accessible.
