Alhaji Abdulrahman Muhammed, the factional acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has officially cancelled the party’s elective national convention scheduled for November 15, citing ongoing legal disputes. His announcement came in Abuja, backed by the Nyesom Wike-led faction of the National Working Committee (NWC).
The cancellation follows a Federal High Court judgment restraining the convention pending further judicial clarification. Muhammed stated that an appeal has been filed at the Court of Appeal and that holding the convention now would violate the rule of law. He noted the party had formally notified INEC about the suspension.
Despite the Oyo State High Court granting permission for the convention to proceed, Muhammed’s faction maintains that a federal court ruling takes precedence. Suspended National Secretary Sen. Samuel Anyanwu said they await appeal outcomes and affirmed their respect for valid judicial authority.
The deepening crisis saw parallel suspensions within the PDP’s leadership, with opposing factions suspending each other. Muhammed reiterated commitment to lawful processes, unity, and the PDP’s role as a key democratic institution.
