The Federal Government has unveiled plans to bring over 1 million out-of-school children back into mainstream education across Nigeria. Announced by Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa at the 69th National Council of Education summit in Akure, the initiative targets children aged 6 to 9 from 12,600 communities, focusing on enrollment in low-cost private schools and training centers alongside the Almajiri Commission.
Over 21,000 out-of-school children in Abuja alone have been identified for enrollment. So far, 109 learning centers/transit schools have been established nationwide, enrolling over 15,000 learners as part of the enrollment drive. The ministry has introduced a hybrid curriculum integrating Quranic education with literacy, numeracy, and civic education to promote inclusive learning.
The initiative features the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Legacy Skills and Training Institute, which equips Almajiri and out-of-school youths with employable skills. Participants at the summit called for building a data-driven, inclusive, and globally competitive education system.
The FCT Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, lauded President Tinubu’s efforts, highlighting the Nigerian Education Loan Fund’s support for over 624,000 tertiary students. He emphasized the need to elevate teaching standards and invest in digital education to prepare learners for the future.
