TURKEY IMPOSES QUARANTINE TO FIGHT FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE OUTBREAK

Turkish authorities have enforced quarantine measures across 22 villages in Bolu province following a foot and mouth disease outbreak. The regional livestock market operations have been suspended to contain the highly contagious viral illness affecting cloven-hoofed animals like cattle, sheep, and goats.

The disease, causing fever, blisters, and painful sores that hinder the animals’ ability to eat and walk, spreads rapidly—even through vehicle tires. Animal transfers are prohibited during the quarantine period.

Turkey has faced repeated foot and mouth disease outbreaks throughout 2025, leading to prolonged closures of livestock markets. Authorities continue vaccination and monitoring efforts, aiming to safeguard animal health and livestock production sustainability.
