NMA REAFFIRMS SUPPORT FOR ENUGU HEALTH WORKERS AMID NARD STRIKE, PRAISES GOV. MBAH’S INITIATIVES

The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) in Enugu State has said it will not disrupt health services in areas where healthcare workers are fairly compensated, praising Governor Peter Mbah for motivating state health workers with improved remuneration. This was disclosed by Dr. Sunday Okafor, NMA Enugu Chairman, during the 2025 Physicians’ Week and the maiden South-East Regional Health Summit.

Okafor highlighted that Enugu’s health workers are amongst the highest paid in Nigeria under Governor Mbah’s administration, commending his vision and commitment to enhancing the public health system. The NMA urged the Federal Government and other state governors to emulate Mbah by prioritizing health workers’ welfare to improve service delivery and reduce strikes by the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD).

While expressing support for resident doctors’ nationwide strike over poor remuneration, the NMA clarified that the issue did not affect Enugu state due to adequate pay by the state government. Okafor also called for a resolution of the strike to avoid disruptions in healthcare services and help needy patients.

In addition to remuneration, Okafor commended Mbah’s investments in healthcare infrastructure including operational Type Two Primary Health Centres across all 260 electoral wards in Enugu. The association pledged continued partnership with the government to support its healthcare vision.

Focusing on this year’s physicians’ week theme, “Healthcare as a Value Chain – Building Efficiency from Policy to Patients,” Okafor emphasized the importance of patient-centered policies to address health inequalities and welcomed the inaugural regional health summit for South-East states to share progress and ideas.
