HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES GIVES 7-DAY ULTIMATUM FOR PAYMENT TO LOCAL CONTRACTORS

The Nigerian House of Representatives has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, and the Minister of Budget, Atiku Bagudu, demanding immediate payment to local contractors for work done under the 2024 and 2025 Appropriations. The resolution came after Minority Leader Rep. Kingsley Chinda highlighted the plight of contractors protesting strongly at the National Assembly gate.

Despite promises made by the Ministers and directives from President Bola Tinubu, implementation has been poor, causing severe hardship and tension nationwide. The House has mandated strict compliance and will report progress within one week, warning of drastic legislative actions if payments are not made.

Additionally, the House suspended plenary for a week to interface with the Executive on the payment issue, with protesters blocking Assembly access. The Deputy Speaker, Rep. Benjamin Kalu, adjourned plenary to November 11 as the protest continues.
