The Youth Empowerment Foundation (YEF) wrapped up its 4th edition training in Benin, empowering over 100 female athletes from across Nigeria with leadership skills and self-defence techniques to combat Gender-Based Violence (GBV). The two-day event, held from October 31 to November 1, brought together participants from states like Abia, Cross River, Delta, Oyo, Ondo, Edo, and Ekiti.
YEF Programme Officer, Tony Eleme, highlighted how sports can build confidence, self-esteem, and resilience, educating girls to recognize and respond to abuse. “Empowering the girl-child means empowering the nation,” he stated.
Dr. Nosakhare Erumwunse from the Child Protection Network Nigeria emphasized that although GBV affects all genders, more than 70% of victims are women and girls. He praised martial arts training like Taekwondo for equipping girls with vital self-defence skills but cautioned against misuse, urging discipline and focus.
This impactful program is part of YEF’s ongoing commitment to uplift young women through sports and education, fostering a generation capable of standing up against violence and thriving as leaders.
